Jinglin' Bling!

Salut mes belles! Happy December, I hope you're all happy and well :) This month is all about the holidays and I'd like to open the season with this glitzy, gold, glam glitter look. I think classic gold makeup is great for the holidays and can go with any outfit or style -- add the glitter and you're ready to rock & jingle!

In this post, I'm also including a quick "Why do you wear makeup" Q&A, addressing some questions outside of my FAQ section and tagged by the lovely Noire Dame -- I'm feeling talkative! Read on :)

"Why do you wear makeup?" Q&A:

Q: What was the first makeup product you bought and loved?
A: Though it was long ago, I remember it like it was yesterday! I was around 10 or 11 and bought Hard Candy's famous baby blue nail polish called "Sky". This purchase was so thrilling because it was the first time that brighter colors started appearing in the 90's after a long period of neutral brown makeup and I was hooked immediately! I kept Sky for years to come as a reminder of my long love affair with nails and makeup.

Q: What is your most used eyeshadow?
A: Without a doubt, Urban Decay Naked eyeshadow. I can't escape it, it goes it with everything and blends like heaven. I just love it!

Q: What are your 3 Holy Grail items?
A: 1. Primer -- I will not wear makeup without primer -- period. My faves are Laura Mercier mineral primer for foundation and Urban Decay primer potion for eyeshadows. 2. Lip Liner -- I'm addicted to lip liner and feel kinda naked without it lol... I love NYX lip liners, they're soft, precise and come in a wide range of colors. 3. Eyeshadow -- pigments, shimmers, neutrals and brights -- I love, collect and value them all! I have way too many favorites and appreciate great products ranging from companies like Coastal Scents to Lime Crime to Nars.

Q: How do you feel without makeup?
A: Makeup is part of my personality and I feel that it reflects me well. I look more Asian and much younger without makeup, and I definitely feel like a younger, truer version of myself when I'm not wearing it. I don't go out without makeup, unless it's to a local store lol... however, I'm not ashamed to face the world in my natural state :)

Q: Why do you wear makeup?
A: I wear makeup -- first and foremost, because I'm an artist and I like to express myself, my mood, and my personality. Makeup, to me, is like an outfit for a day: it shows off my style, makes me feel good, and protects me from the elements. The process of applying makeup is my daily ritual and I find it extremely relaxing and meditative. With freshly done makeup, I feel ready to tackle my responsibilities and take on the day's challenge. Sharing my makeup story with you is my way of passing on the feel-good attitude associated with makeup art and encouraging you to seek out the best possible you to reflect your inner beauty.

On to the maquillage!
Black & Gold Party-Ready Holiday Glitter Eyes How-to:
  1. Prime your lids from the lash line to the brow and allow a few seconds for the primer to set.
  2. Using a flat brush and patting motions, apply Half Baked (Gold) eyeshadow to the entire lid and up to the crease.
  3. Using a stiff dome shaped brush and windshield wiper motions, apply Naked (nude) to the crease.
  4. With the same brush and technique, apply Buck (soft brown) to the outer portion of your crease to add dimension.
  5. Using Smog (shimmery bronze) on a pencil brush, lightly outline the crease (or slightly above the crease if you have Asian eyes or smaller lids) and blend out the line with a fluffy brush.
  6. Apply Darkhorse (shimmery brown) to the outer "v" and blend out the edges, lifting them up towards the corner of the brow. Next, apply Creep (shimmery black) to intensify the outer "v".
  7. Line the lower lash line and inner corner with a dark brown pencil (Illamasqua Honour) and smudge out the line using Hustle (shimmery dark purple). Tight-line the entire waterline.
  8. Highlight the brow bone using a matte creamy shadow (I used UD Foxy from Naked 2 palette) and add a pearly highlight (Virgin) to the high point under the brow arch and inner corner of the eye.
  9. Add gold glitter by generously applying NYX candy glitter liner in Gold over Half Baked eyeshadow. Cover the entire lid area evenly by spreading the glitter gel with a synthetic brush. Allow 30 seconds for the glitter to dry. Reapply if needed.
  10. Add a bright golden highlight to the inner corner by outlining it with Rhyme liner. Line the top lash line with a black liner and extend the outer wing.
  11. Apply spiky false lashes like Kiss i-Envy #KPE22 and your party eyes are complete!
Wear this look to a Christmas or New Years party, a night on the town or even your birthday celebration! Let your eyes sparkle and reflect the lights of the holiday season!

YouTube update: I made a sincere attempt to film this look for a tutorial, but realized that I have to start with simpler looks to make sure I cover all my bases: lighting, equipment, placement, editing and other technicalities. In filming the tutorial, I discovered that I'm very active during makeup application and have to work on my blocking to stay within the frame while zoomed in on the eyes. Creating video tutorials is not easy and although I'm making a lot of progress, I still have a lot of learning to do before I can present something worthwhile. With that said, I am planning on debuting my live video tutorials within the month! Yay!! Of course, if you have any tips or suggestions, throw them my way!!

Bisous,

  5. Gorgeous look and great interview. I'm glad you said you love who you are without the makeup, that's healthy! I think it's so important to make that distinction between loving makeup as a form of expression and being attached to it out of insecurity.
