Fierce Klawz for NYE

Salut mes amis! For this New Years Eve, I'm going all out and piling on the shimmer, the glitter and the sequins. This is the perfect time of the year to experiment with kitschy, over the top styles and even be a little gaudy! You'll have the rest of the winter to be neutral and boring, but today is the day for going out and showing off a little! I definitely have a tacky little Russian leopard living inside of me, and tonight I'll be unleashing her wicked klawz, disco ball makeup and teensy get-up -- Why? Cuz it's 2013 and I'm living it up!!!

See more klawz & inspiration :)

Glamour, Glitz & GlossyBOX -- December

Bonjour mes amis! This season, I'm keeping it "glamorous, glitzy and glossy" with a little help from my not-so-secret arsenal: December's Glossybox. This month's box has outdone itself once again -- not only does it live up to its theme, but it actually expresses the joy of giving with its perfectly curated, personalized items, impeccable packaging and genuine care. I swear by the Glossybox because it never fails to impress me. The people behind the brand really listen to their customers and utilize this advice to perfect each month's box so that it is better than the previous, and way beyond any service of its kind.

Holiday Lights, Camera, Makeup and Action!

Salut mes amis! The day is finally here and I'm proud to present my first ever VIDEO tutorial and "live" makeup transformation!! I can't even begin to express to you how ecstatic I am to finally be on YouTube and how much I'm looking forward to sharing this new experience with all of you. This is a monumental day for this blog and my brand new channel: Maryam Maquillage and I can't believe we did it! Thank you guys for all your unconditional support and positivity -- you have motivated me to take this thing further and I'm really stoked to embark on this new journey with all of you!

A SPECIAL MERCI goes out to my Lee Lee, my Mr. Maquillage, who filmed, edited and produced this tutorial without any prior knowledge of video production! He is amazing and I simply couldn't have done it without him. He really is the father of this blog LOL...

And now... on to the Maquillage!

"Like A Present" Holiday Makeup

Bonjour mes amis! Continuing with this month's seasonal theme, today's holiday look is festive, flattering and ultra feminine. I wanted to create a sultry smokey eye that would look great on anyone, add a pop of color, and a bit of glitz; so Voila -- this is what I came up with!

"Tree Lighting" Christmas Nail Art

Hi friends! Today's Christmas themed nail art is more traditional than my previous design and uses nail polishes from my favorite China Glaze Holiday Joy Collection. Over the last couple of weeks, I've seen a lot of Christmas-y manicures, and I couldn't help but be inspired by them. This "Tree Lighting" nail art is a combination of a few designs I've come across, with a couple of personal touches to give it my own spin. Hope you like my take on it!

Wild Wild Xmas!

Salut mes belles! Christmas is less than a week away and this year I'm taking a walk on the wild side! Today I'm using the traditional "gold and red" combo and revamping it with a bit of edge and a dose of glitter for all you non-traditionalists out there! This look is fierce, but simple enough for anyone to recreate. Let's get started!

#Tinseltown Party @Refinery29

Bonjour mes amis! With my Belvedere mix in my hand, I present to you my recap of the latest and greatest holiday shopping extravaganza: Tinseltown Bazaar, a pop-up shop set up in the heart of Soho, brought to you by Refinery29. Opening night party was a total blast -- and though I generally loathe & repel all holiday shopping activities -- this was an event worth bringing my cash to! Mix in the cocktails, the treats and the beats, add some eye candy, and top it off with a bunch of freebies -- Voila! You've got yourself quite a memorable kick-off to the holiday season.

My Brows, Anastasia Style!

Salut mes amis! My long-awaited eyebrow post is finally here, featuring products from Anastasia Beverly Hills, founded by Hollywood's top brow guru and celebrity beauty expert, Anastasia Soare. Anastasia's brow shaping technique is based on the classic "golden ratio" method in art and takes an architectural "blueprint" approach to brow structure and shape. Her method focuses on the eyebrows as the starting point in beauty, emphasizing that properly-proportioned eyebrows not only frame the entire face, but also help bring symmetry and balance to all the features. I firmly subscribe to Anastasia's brow philosophy and am extremely excited to share it here with all of you. No makeup look is complete without well-shaped, groomed brows, and today, I'm showing you how to achieve the perfect brow, Anastasia style!

Dressed-Up in Funky Tropics

Salut mes amis! Today's abstract "Tropical" makeup look was inspired by a set of funky Nail Dress stickers by Kiss and was created using some of my favorite products. With all the holiday madness going on right now, I just wanted to conceptualize something different and fun for my kind of holiday season. Not to worry, I will have plenty of Christmas-y goodness coming up after this post -- today, I just wanted to revisit my artistic side and show you something fresh! I don't know about you, but I need a little break from all the ready-to-wear makeup hehe...

Metals, Shimmers & Sparkles

Salut mes amis! This month's theme is glitz and glam, so I'm whipping out my glitter liner and shimmery eyeshadows to create this bright eyed metallic daytime makeup look! Teal is one of my favorite colors and looks great on all eye colors, especially on brownies!

A Festival of Lights, Glitter and Nail Art!

Shalom friends! Today's glittery nail art is festive for a reason: Hanukkah is right around the corner and this design is for all of you who are celebrating the Festival of Lights! I'm not much of a religious person, but because my family and friends are quite mixed culturally, I make sure to commemorate all holidays, including the religious ones. I like to celebrate them my way: with makeup and nail art!

This design was completed using two festive nail polishes from the China Glaze Holiday Joy Collection. Not only are these shades perfect for Hanukkah, but they are also great for the winter and are totally season appropriate.

Jinglin' Bling!

Salut mes belles! Happy December, I hope you're all happy and well :) This month is all about the holidays and I'd like to open the season with this glitzy, gold, glam glitter look. I think classic gold makeup is great for the holidays and can go with any outfit or style -- add the glitter and you're ready to rock & jingle!

In this post, I'm also including a quick "Why do you wear makeup" Q&A, addressing some questions outside of my FAQ section and tagged by the lovely Noire Dame -- I'm feeling talkative! Read on :)

Bluesy Neutrals

Bonjour mes amis! It's the last day of the month and I'm closing it off with a pop of color! A few days ago, I received my first batch of Makeup Geek eye shadows and gel liners to play with and wanted my first MUG look to be wearable, fun and holiday-appropriate. With Hanukkah right around the corner, I thought I'd focus on blues and whites (or in this case, neutrals) to deliver a bright-yet-suble look that anyone can replicate!

November's Glossybox Brings Back Memories...

Salut mes amis! As the title of this post suggests, this month's Glossybox has really inspired me to reminisce and revisit... a simpler era of makeup I grew up on and one that is making a creeping come-back: the 90's! I was a 90's kid for sure and am really drawn to brown makeup and gothic style; however, since I'm not 13 anymore, I'm revamping my inner goth child and giving her a modern outlook.

The Sun Always Rises

Hi guys, today's makeup post is symbolic and optimistic, dedicated to all the victims of Hurricane Sandy, including my family: my father, his wife, and my 5-year-old brother and sister who have lost their home and belongings to this horrible disaster. Although their situation is extremely tough and emotionally overwhelming, we are staying hopeful and positive, thanks to all the incredible support we've received from friends, family, volunteers and even selfless strangers. After the storm, the sun always rises, and we are looking forward to a brighter future!

It's a new day

I don't really know how to begin this post or how to even go back to blogging after everything that has happened since Hurricane Sandy hit the New York / New Jersey area. I have never witnessed anything as devastating and heartbreaking as watching my dad lose his home and family belongings, but I am so thankful that he and the family are safe and sound, which is more than I can say for some of his neighbors. My 5 year old brother and sister spent a few days with me (I live in a lucky area that seemed to escape the storm), but they're back with their parents and are staying at their grandmother's house, in an effort to resume their school routines and feel a sense of normalcy. The outpour of help and support given by friends and volunteers has been incredibly inspiring and uplifting. Although the borough of Staten Island is a war zone and looks like a post-Apocalyptic movie set, the beautiful spirit of the people is unshakeable and even stronger than before. United we stand, united we fall, united we rise and rebuild. I am proud to say that humanity is alive and well and I am looking forward to the rainbow after the storm. Please pray for those who lost everything in this disaster and appreciate every moment you have with your loved ones.

If you would like to help a family who lost everything to Hurricane Sandy, please send your donations through PayPal to AzrDesign@mail.ru -- no amount is too small, we Thank You!

Dia de los Muertos: Sugar Skulls, Calaveras, Catrinas

Hola amigos! Recognize this skeletora? It's me, your girl Maryam, disguised as a Mexican Catrina and painted as a sugar skull for Dia de los Muertos aka Day of the Dead! This haunting, yet vibrant Mexican holiday follows Halloween ("All Hallows Eve") and precedes All Saints Day (or "All Hallows Day"), in a tradition to commemorate friends and loved ones who have passed. In Mexican and South American cultures, the Day of the Dead is celebrated in color with decorated skulls (las calaveras catrinas), bright flowers and edible sugar skulls adorning the altars that host the festivities. It is my dream to eat sugar skulls and drink tequila in Mexico for Dia de los Muertos, and one day I'll make it a reality! For now, I'm celebrating in spirit and in full makeup in stormin' NYC... MUA-Ha-Ha!!!

The Modern Witchy

MUA-Ha-Ha!!! Halloween is right around the corner and this year I'm keeping it simple. "The Witch" is my go-to Halloween look and can be interpreted in many ways: she can be ugly, green & wretched; she can be young, cute and bewitching; and she can also be sexy, sly and seductive. My Modern Witch costume is part mystical, part seductive and is super easy to replicate. So, if you're still unsure about your Halloween attire and/or if you didn't really plan anything, the Modern Witch is a great last minute idea and won't break your bank!

It's a Glossy Event with Koh Gen Do!

Salut mes amis :)) Hope your Sunday was a Fun-Day!! Last Friday, I had the opportunity to wind down and have some fun of my own at a Koh Gen Do launch party hosted by Glossybox at Sephora Times Square. I love to celebrate, socialize, and am a huge fan of both brands, so this event was totally my thang! What could be better than sippin' on champagne, munchin' on cupcakes, trying on & talkin' makeup, plus taking home a glossy box full of goodies? For a beauty blogger, there truly is nothing better. This party was a total blast filled with amazing energy and people, and today, I'm showing you a snippet!

Daytime Smokey with Missha & UD Naked 2

Salut mes belles :)) Hope your week is going great and you're looking forward to this month's festivities! October is my biggest month and this year I am busier than ever. In beauty news, I'm working on a lot of various projects, one of which is my transition to YouTube. As a bday gift, my LeeLee surprised me with professional studio equipment, and the packages have been arriving all week in time for my birthday on the 23rd. Creating professional grade videos takes a lot of work and I'm so thankful to my Lee for his support of this venture. He really is the FATHER of my blog, my Mr. Maquillage, and this blog simply would not exist without him!!

Today's Daytime Smokey makeup look was created on film for a practice YouTube tutorial. I had LeeLee take a few photos while I was filming and took a few of my own after the look was complete. I quite like how it turned out, so I'm sharing it here today!

Cut-Crease Pastel Rainbows!

Bonjour mes amis!! I'm doing something a little different today and I hope you like it. I'm taking a conceptual cut crease rainbow makeup look and applying it in a way that's more wearable and flattering. This look started out as something totally different (check out my inspiration folder on Pinterest) -- I was initially going for big and bold, but I cut it short because I liked THIS so much. I thought it was perfect for a little daytime drama, so I wore it out to brunch! Voila!

smooth strands, curls & waves with ghd styler

Bonjour mes amis! One of my most FAQ's is about my hair: "What do you use to dye your hair?" -- "Is your hair naturally straight?" and "How do you style your hair?" Although I'm not much of a guru when it comes hair styling, these questions are valid and I'm addressing them all in this post. Two of them are already answered with the picture you see above. No, my hair isn't naturally straight (sadly, it isn't curly either) and I use this ghd black gloss classic styler as my #1 tool to tame my tresses to smooth perfection and also to create luscious curls!!

"Caramela Chocolata" Como Sofia

Hola chicas :)) Without looking at the title, can you guess the Latina celebrity whose makeup style I'm imitating? Hint: this look was worn last week to the Emmy's, by a certain celeb who had a pretty funny and public wardrobe malfunction, posted on Twitter! Who could this modern mama be? LOL I'm terrible at keeping it subtle!!

October News & Past Faves!

Hola mis amigos! October is here and it's a huge month -- not only does it celebrate my favorite Fall holiday: Halloween, but it is also my birthday month (Oct 23) and this year, I've been gifted with the best present ever. If you follow me on Social Media, you already know the news, but if you don't, here is my official announcement:

Maryam Maquillage exclusive nail art and how-to's are featured in the Fall/Winter edition of Cosmopolitan for Latinas!!! I'd like to thank everyone at Cosmo For Latinas for your support and belief in Maryam Maquillage and I want to especially thank all my followers for giving me the inspiration and motivation to do this!! <3
I'm super excited to share the news and will be celebrating this occasion throughout the month with Latin inspired nail art, celebrity makeup looks and more -- please let me know if you have any requests!! My feature also coincides with Hispanic heritage month, so the timing couldn't be more perfect!

This month, I will also be commemorating October's breast cancer awareness and including some pink looks and nails. Of course, you can expect to see several Halloween options: the witch requested by my sister, Lady Gaga and/or Nicki Minaj requested by friends, and a special surprise I'll reveal later. If this month isn't jam-packed already, I'm going to attempt to include something for Oktoberfest and will close up the month with Dia de los Muertos (Nov 1). Whew, that is a busy month indeed!!! Stay tuned :))

Off I go! For now, enjoy my past favorites of the aforementioned!!

Sleek, Chic, & Street-Smart: The City-Kitty

Bonjour mes amis! It's official, fall is here and I'm eager to dress up in rich colors, cozy fabrics, luxurious scarves and tough leather! My association with fall is a depiction of me rushing to the subway to get to class, with bitter NY wind slapping my face, and my grande mocha soothing my nerves as I scramble to find my metro card. It's a story most New Yorkers are familiar with and one I am happy to leave behind! This year, I'm celebrating not having to rush to class, and I'm also excited to change up the look of my autumn makeup from school appropriate to party ready!

Today's makeup is dark, shimmery and demure -- perfect for nighttime and fit for a City-Kitty! I'm a huge fan of darker makeup, it always makes me feel like a chic, sleek, powerful heroine in an awesome thriller, and I'm excited to tell you all about it :)) P. S. This look can be achieved in under $30 -- those are some serious savings that any street-smart city chick can appreciate!

Showcase: Miniature Nail Artworks

Hello old friends and new!! Today's post is a showcase of my latest nail-art, featuring a hand-painted collection of 10 distinctive designs for each fingernail. I created this nail art with no theme in mind -- I was just practicing my micro-doodling -- the result: a melting pot of swirls, scribbles, tribals, abstract & realism. This creative chaos combines some of my favorite elements in art (which is so very me) and is pretty cohesive overall. What do you think?

Zen Society Skincare

Hello old friends and new! Fashion Week is over and I'm back to my regular blogging schedule -- woo-hoo!! I must admit, the past few weeks have been extremely fast-paced and tiresome on my body. I've attended many events, met a ton of people and have worn A LOT of makeup. Given the circumstances, my skin hasn't had much of a chance to breathe or regenerate itself and with all the stress I've put it through, I was expecting a massive breakout-age the week following all the activity. This time, however, my skin was saved. Lucky for me, a wonderful care package arrived my way just in time and although my skin had faced the worst possible conditions (constant makeup, lack of sleep & stress), these conditions were met by an equally powerful antidote: Zen Society skincare. In today's post, I want to go back to the roots of nature and share a review of the Green skincare line that proved itself in the time I needed it most.

Spikes, Studs and Fashion Week

Bonjour mes amis and Happy NY Fashion Week to all my Fashionistas!! This week is always a memorable one in the life of a New Yorker. Between Fashion's Night Out (FNO) and all the preparations for the shows, it's hard not to get inspired and/or influenced by all the lively and expressive street fashions that can be seen on the sidewalks of New York. This week, I'm inspired by fashion and interpreting it through my nail art and decoration. Today's nail post is vampy, gothic and avant garde -- for the dark, McQueen soul in you...

Dress Up Your Labor Day Whites!

Hello old friends and new! Today is Labor Day, a federal American holiday observed on the first Monday in September, historically celebrating the economic and social contributions of workers. Culturally, this holiday marks the unofficial end of summer, and symbolically, it is the last day of the year when it is fashionable to wear white. Although, this tradition was mostly observed in High Society, it has become a pop culture fad and is often celebrated with "White Parties" hosted by popular celebrities in upscale locations such as The Hamptons, NY.

Today's makeup look celebrates the symbolic end of summer and dresses up my whites in brights! I'm sad to kiss my summer goodbye, but for now, I'll embrace the spirit and celebrate it in style :))

Hot-n-Cool 4 Back 2 School

Salut mes belles! With only a few days left in the month of August, I find myself in a melancholy and nostalgic mood, reminiscing about the cheerful days of my favorite season and transitioning into the seriousness of fall. Although, I'm no longer in school, the end of summer still signifies the beginning of the new school year, even for me; and as much I dreaded school, I also loved it and sometimes wish I could go back in time. Anyway, I digress... Today's makeup look is "Back 2 School" inspired and was created using one of my favorite brands and makeup mediums: Dinair Airbrush Makeup! Why? Because it's easy, fun and can save you a lot of time when getting ready in the morning!

Sunny, Delightful & Eco-Friendly

Salut mes belles et mes beaus! I hope your weekend was fun filled and relaxing. Mine was a bit of both: I partied on Saturday at Moma PS1 the Warm Up (a must do summer rave if you're ever in NY) and had "Sunday-Funday" with the girls while getting pampered at L'Occitane En Provence (avec du vin, bien sur!). I Must say, I'm feeling quite rejuvenated and ready to tackle my week, so let me get started!

Today's maquillage was worn to the Green Your Beauty Routine blogger event I attended last week. I wanted to stay true to the theme of the day, so I created my eye look using eco-friendly mineral eyeshadows from Zosimos Botanicals, an all green company I had worked with in the past, which was also was featured at the event!

This week, I've hosted some house guests, attended my siblings' birthday party, went to a couple of beauty blogger events and met a lot of new fabulous people from all walks of life! Perhaps, I'll revisit some of my personal events in future posts, but right now, I'd like to introduce you to some wonderful green products I acquired at the "Green Your Beauty Routine" NYC beauty blogger event. A big thanks to hosts Kimberlee and Nicole, as well as the participating companies and key speakers!
Today's green nail art was created in time for Eid (a celebration marking the end of Ramadan) and was made possible with NYC's leading eco-friendly nail polish line: Priti NYC. I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone :)
